In Short: Proactive, Response-able, Resourceful, Resilient

Size does matter. Big, top down, centralized systems cannot keep track of the widely divergent conditions that prevail in every location within their purview. They cannot respond quickly or effectively when crises multiply or ratchet up in intensity, spread and become syndromes. This is why the diverse kinds and communities of cells that manage the immune system are distributed throughout the body, not centralized. It is these immune system cell communities rather than the busy, preoccupied brain at the top of the body that gather and share the information that protects us from pathogens. They interpret information and coordinate and deliver appropriate responses.

Like the cell communities that comprise the immune system, the scattered, locally self-reliant, interdependent, organically democratic natural communities that comprise the biosphere are constantly aware of changes in their economies and environments that call for changes in their behavior. They are small enough to be able, most of the time, to respond to those changes. They are smart enough and well enough informed to be able to respond intelligently and appropriately. And they are adaptable enough, most of the time, to bounce back, retain or recover healthy function and maintain their basic identity when a change has been effectively dealt with.

“Resilience is the capacity of a system to absorb disturbance and still retain its basic identity and function.”28
